172nd Search and Rescue Squadron

The 172nd Search and Rescue Squadron was a unit of Starfleet Search and Rescue. It is commanded by Commander Salvador Davenport and is responsible for SAR operations in the Bajor sector. The squadron was activated in 2329 and responsible for the border with Bajor and Cardassia. It was part of the 3rd Search and Rescue Wing. (Star Trek: Voyager - Dark Realm)

History

The Squadron was initially based at the Dorvan V Installation during the Cardassian War. The unit was responsible for countless rescues of not only Starfleet personnel, but of many Bajoran refugees and survivors of destroyed Cardassian vessels.

In 2370, following the treaty between the Cardassians and the Federation, the 172nd Search and Rescue Squadron moved to Deep Space Nine.

The squadron sent an eight man detachment to the USS Voyager under the command of Lieutenant j.g. Henry Kano for the Chakotay mission against the Maquis in 2371. The detachment, along with Chakotay's ship and the USS Voyager, was stranded in the Delta Quadrant from 2371 to 2378.

During the Second Federation-Klingon War, elements of the Squadron participated in the First Battle of Deep Space Nine where they assisted Dr. Julian Bashir in treating wounded patients and helped fight off Klingon troops attempting to overrun the infirmary.

The squadron was forced to leave Deep Space Nine during the Dominion War after the Second Battle of Deep Space Nine. It would be temporarily based out of Starbase 375 until Operation Return.

It was a player in the Dominion War, participating in numerous hazardous rescues and in numerous engagement with Jem'Hadar, Cardassian, and Breen forces. The squadron suffered many casualties during this time frame, of which Commander Davenport was one.

During Operation Return, the Squadron was responsible for the rescue of thousands of wounded Federation and Klingon personnel. It was then that Commander Davenport was killed when he and a four man away team boarded a Cardassian fighter hanging dead in space that exploded due to a booby trap.

After the Dominion War the 172nd Search and Rescue Squadron would relocate to the Bajoran moon of Derna and play a big role in assisting in reconstruction efforts throughout Cardassian territory. (Star Trek: Voyager - Dark Realm)
