- In his second year at Starfleet Academy, James T. Kirk earns so much respect from his tutors that he is assigned to teach a Federation History class to first year cadets. One of the students in his class is Gary Mitchell, and despite there initially being some animosity between the two, they become great friends. Mitchell will later serve under Kirk as navigator aboard the USS Enterprise. (TOS: "Court Martial", "Where No Man Has Gone Before")
- Later in the year, Kirk and Mitchell are assigned to a training mission aboard the USS Republic for a two-week patrol of the Klingon Neutral Zone. When the cadets are ordered to their quarters by the captain so that the senior staff can complete a secret mission, Mitchell persuades Kirk to try and access the sensor logs to determine what is happening. This draws the attention of Captain Bannock who reprimands the two cadets. (My Brother's Keeper novel: Republic)
- A subsequent survey mission to Alpha Varangis is called off so that the USS Republic can attend the peace talks on the planet Heir'tzan. The efforts of Mitchell, Kirk, and Phelana Yudrin (an Andorian with whom Kirk is having a romance) foil an assassination attempt to disrupt the talks, and they are all commended by Bannock. - Vorzok, while showing an aptitude for xenobiology and xenomedicine, has difficulty in dealing with the emotions of other races outside of Vulcan and decides Starfleet and interactions with other races is not for him. He resigns his commission and continues his research in the private sector on Vulcan. (Star Trek: USS Hathaway)
