- Nguyen Dinh Van and Dr. Nguyen Thi Xuan-Hong, civilian crew aboard a Starfleet starship, are exploring deep space beyond the Typhon Expanse where they have a run-in with a hostile alien race. The Nguyens, along with a few others, survive. They adopt Yh'ahni after her mother dies after giving birth to her.
