The aircraft carrier was a type of naval ship used by several Earth nation-states during the 20th and 21st centuries.
This type of vessel had a flat deck that allowed it to carry, launch and receive aircraft. They became widely used during World War II and beyond.
The USS Enterprise (CV-6) was an aircraft carrier in use during the Second World War. In an alternate timeline's 1944, Earth Starfleet Enterprise commanding officer Jonathan Archer, when mentioning the Enterprise, inadvertently misled Alicia Travers into thinking he served aboard the namesake aircraft carrier. (This alternate Enterprise was destroyed during the war.) (ENT: "Storm Front")
- In the mainstream timeline, Enterprise (CV-6) survived World War II and was scrapped in 1958.
The aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN-65) took its place in 1961. In 1986, Starfleet officers Pavel Chekov and Nyota Uhura sneaked aboard the Enterprise (CVN-65) to gather nuclear radiation from a reactor to recrystallize dilithium for their captured Klingon Bird-of-Prey. The recrystallization would allow Chekov, Uhura and their crew to return to the 23rd century. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)
In 1995, a Russian Lenin-class aircraft carrier, the Sergei G. Gorshkov, mysteriously disappeared. Nearly 370 years later, the officers and crew of the USS Enterprise-D would solve the mystery of that disappearance. (TNG novel: Ghost Ship)
Various Starfleet starships were named after aircraft carriers, including the USS Courageous, USS Indomitable, USS Victorious and USS Wasp. (Star Trek: The Nomad Frontier: "Baptism of Fire"; Last Unicorn Games RPG: Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 1: The Ships of Starfleet; Last Unicorn RPG: The Dominion War Sourcebook: The Fires of Armageddon; USS Baldwin)
