The Ariel-class shuttlecarriers (sometimes called supercarriers) were a class of United Federation of Planets Starfleet vessels on active duty beginning in 2278. (Heavy Cruiser Evolution Blueprints, Ships of the Star Fleet)
Because of the size and expense of this class, only four were ever built out of ten planned.
USS Manna was lost at Outpost Foxtrot VI during the Tomed Incident; her sister ship USS Adjuvant was badly damaged. Repairs were deemed economically unviable. USS Ichkeul and USS Ariel were mothballed in 2312, after receiving a globular-shield upgrades in 2302. (Hobbyist's Guide to the UFP Starfleet and Its History, Part 1b)
Nomenclature[]
The class and lead ship were named after a character in William Shakespeare's play The Tempest, though possibly also after one of the numerous satellites of Uranus, in the Sol system.
