The Armstrong class entered service in 2197 and along with the Venture-class was meant to replace the aging Daedalus-class explorer. The Armstrong shared several design features with the Daedalus. The ship was made up of a spherical primary hull, which was more ovoid than that of the Daedalus, connected directly to a cylindrical engineering hull. (Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 4: Starships of the Original Series Era})
- The Armstrong is also said to be one of the first classes to have ship-based transporters as part of its initial design due to the technology becoming available in 2186. Star Trek: Enterprise would later set in canon that ship-based transporter technology had existed since the early-2150s.
