An assault team is a soldier or security officer group sent on offensive or defensive away missions. This type of team differs from an away team in the fact the team members usually carry heavier weaponry, specialized for battle.
Earth Starfleet created the MACOs for assault team missions in the 22nd century. (ENT: "Shockwave")

After taking command of the USS Bajor, Kanril Eleya ordered an assault unit created under the security department, recruiting members of her crew with combat experience or an A-minus or better in combat evaluations. Senior Chief Petty Officer Athezra Darrod was the head of the squad, which was deployed in actions on Orvis II and in the mirror universe, among others.
