Baraka (Arabic: بركة; Flamsteed designation: Hromi 6 Prime) was a Class M planet in the Hromi 6 system, located in the Hromi Cluster in the Beta Quadrant.
The planet's full name in Arabic was Almubarakat Manzil Jadid fi Alsamawat (المباركة منزل جديد في السماوات, translated as "Blessed New Home in the Heavens"), but most of the sector's inhabitants usually shortened it to simply "Baraka". Planetary science[]
Though technically well within the Class M range, Baraka orbited close enough to Hromi 6, a G4-class star, that it was virtually uninhabitable at equatorial latitudes. It also had an extreme axial tilt that often led to terrible storms.
History[]
Nominally a colony of United Earth and a member of the Federation, Baraka was settled in the late 2240s by humans of a Kharijite sect from the North African Alliance and in 2406 was listed as a Category 2 planet with a population of 140 million people. The Barakan government took the form of a theocratic constitutional monarchy, headed by a titular caliph who answered to an elected legislature of imams. In 2406, Rashida El-Hashem was Calipha of Baraka.
Because of this, Baraka was viewed as largely antithetical to the ethos of its progenitor state, and during the Federation-Klingon War the Federation Security Agency and Starfleet Intelligence documented multiple sightings of Klingon operatives smuggling in illegal weapons and seeking to subvert the populace. Similar operations culminated in the defection in mid-November 2406 of five planets as a client state of the Klingon Empire, the Moab Confederacy. The Barakans, however, disliked the Klingons' obsession with battle for religious reasons and viewed the secession as borderline apostasy, coming as it did from fellow "People of the Book".
On 26 November 2406, Starfleet and the Bajoran Militia landed troops on Baraka in preparation for Operation Sand Spider, securing the reluctant cooperation of Calipha Rashida to establish a base there and train a colonial militia. Admiral Stephen Alcott, having captured critical intelligence on a planned Klingon invasion of Baraka, planned to lay a trap.
In the subsequent Battle of Baraka, the combined Starfleet, Bajoran, and Barakan forces routed the Klingon invasion, inflicting disproportionate casualties on the attackers.
