Barbara Smith

Barbara Smith was a Starfleet mustang who served aboard the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) in the 2260s.

She served as an enlisted yeoman in 2265 when the Enterprise first passed through the galactic barrier. Captain Kirk had difficulty remembering her name, referring to her as Jones. During the resulting turbulence, she briefly held Gary Mitchell's hand. (TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before")

Smith left the Enterprise shortly thereafter to earn an officer commission. Around 2269, she was granted the rank of lieutenant j.g. and requested to be returned to the Enterprise. (STC: "To Boldly Go, Part II") Smith served as the Enterprise's relief conn officer for the final year of the five-year mission, and was left in command of the ship on at least one occasion. (STC: "What Ships Are For")

During her re-deployment, she became friends with Elise McKennah. (STC: "Come Not Between the Dragons")

Triggered by the remnants of her contact with Mitchell, Smith developed ESP powers in 2270 when the Enterprise again visited the galactic barrier. She used these to sabotage the esper-hijacked USS Kongo, dying in the process. (STC: "To Boldly Go, Part I", "To Boldly Go, Part II")
