Barnard's Star (also referred to as Barnard Prime) was a red dwarf star, spectral class M4, approximately 6 light years from the Terran star Sol. It was the fourth-nearest star to Sol, after the three stars of Proxima Centauri, Alpha Centauri A, and Alpha Centauri B.
The planet Matanda orbited Barnard's Star. In 2366, Starfleet Science Archaeology Division conducted an archaeological expedition to Matanda, led by Commander Anne Lansing aboard the USS Worsaae. The Worsaae received orders to proceed to Wolf 359 at best speed to assist in combating the Borg, but a class 9 plasma storm prohibited them from making a hasty departure. (Star Trek: The Prospect Chronicles: "The Burnt Child")
- According to the book Star Trek: Star Charts, Barnard's Star is on the opposite side of Sol than Wolf 359 is.
The human colony Xartheb was founded in 2131 on the sixth planet of the system by settlers from Neptune Colony Four. Most of the colonists were geologists and technicians running semi-automated mines. (Orion Press: "First Contact 101", Alis Volat Propriis, "Dear Mom")
Mike Delaney, the newly-transferred helm officer of the USS Potemkin in 2296, was a native of Xartheb. (Project Potemkin: "Doctor's Orders")
