The Belknap-class strike cruiser was a type of starship on active duty in Starfleet during the 23rd century. An initial block of the class was commissioned ca. 2279.
The first ship of this class was actually the lead ship and prototype of the Decatur-class, USS Decatur. Decatur was the first United Federation of Planets ship-of-the-line to have linear warp drive and was prototyped ca. 2270. Modifications to various ship's systems after trials resulted in a strike cruiser class named after USS Belknap. [N 3]
The entire Belknap class was contracted with only two shipyards to facilitate design and mass production. Two contracts were awarded; one for 12 ships - including the Decatur, which had already been built - awarded to the Boston Shipyards division of Cosmadyne Corporation on Earth, and one for eight ships awarded to Star Fleet Divisions Cameron facility on Deneb V.[1]

Notes[]
- ↑ Decatur limited to warp 10.5 due to design limitations.[1]
- ↑ The number of weapons emplacements would vary between ships. Decatur had five twin banks of phasers on the primary hull, and two single mounts on the bottom of the secondary hull. Most Belknap class had seven twin banks of phasers on the primary hull as well as one bank on the bottom of the secondary hull. There was also a single phaser mount above and behind the ship's impulse engine. USS Raan and USS Sur Cha both had eight twin banks of phasers on the primary hull, one bank on the bottom of the secondary hull, and a phaser bank above and behind the ships impulse engine. The ships also had one single phaser mount on the rear of the secondary hull.[1]
- ↑ Decatur would, after some refit, would be included in the inventory of the Belknap class as a training vessel.[1]
