The Bonaventure was an early post-First Contact ship of the survey cruiser designation in service to collaborating nations of Earth. It had begun construction as an orbital defensive space cruiser for the United States Air Force of the Seneca-class, but progress was suspended as a focus on smaller, more nimble and numerous vessels took hold. Heavily damaged by the early violence of World War III, she was salvaged and re-purposed in 2064.

For her survey mission, she was crewed with 5 officers and 40 crewmen and could remain self-sufficient for 6 years. She could sustain warp 2.0 (on the OCU scale) and achieve a maximum speed of warp 2.5. Equipped with 2 re-purposed platform maintenance shuttles and 2 orbital shuttlepods, she was also provided–for defensive purposes–2 Sorac 1.2(+) class lasers, gas envelope deflectors, glass bead anti-laser emitters and a 10 terrawatt electromagnetic shield.

In the interregnum period of the New United Nations, multiple nations worked collaboratively to complete the now-designated Bonaventure and train a multinational crew, in order to put the best face on for the newly arrived Vulcans. A shakedown cruiser of three months took the vessel outside the Sol system in 2065, before she departed for Tau Ceti in 2066. She returned to Earth prior to the now-returning pre-warp Columbus-class class ships, Icarus, Hector, and Prometheus. Re-equipped and sent out again in 2077, she did not return from a survey mission to Sirius. (Star Fleet Starship Recognition Manual: Report: Bonaventure Survey Cruiser)
