The California-class (also known as the Cali-class) starships were in Federation Starfleet service during the late 24th century. (Star Trek: Lower Decks; Star Trek: Coda novel: The Ashes of Tomorrow)
Their remit was to convey mission specialists for so-called "second contacts". (LD: "Second Contact")
The mission profile of individual California-class vessels was indicated by the hull painting: red (e.g., USS Rubidoux and USS Solvang) indicated that their purpose was conveying ambassadors and other dignitaries; blue (e.g., USS Merced and USS Carlsbad) indicated medical support; and yellow (e.g., USS Cerritos) indicated engineering and operational support.
Nomenclature[]
The class is named after the state of California in North America, on Earth. All of the ships are named after municipalities in that state.
