Captain a military rank used in MACOs and Federation Marines, immediately superior to first lieutenant and subordinate to major. They are often regarded as company officers for serving in the element of companies. Captains typically commands a company of approximately 100 to 300 marines.
- MACO captains did not appear in Star Trek: Enterprise to avoid audience confusion over rank names.
This rank is also used in the Bajoran Militia (DS9) and the Federation Starfighter Corps. (Star Trek: Remington)
The Romulan Ground Forces used the rank it was above lieutenant and below major. They usually commanded al'gess'vals. (The Dominion War Sourcebook: The Fires of Armageddon) The rank was known as lhaell in Rihannsu; even more importantly among the Tal Shiar. (RIS Bouteina)
The rank is equivalent to the Starfleet rank of lieutenant and the Romulan and pre-Federation Vulcan rank of lieutenant.
HoH was the Klingon term for an infantry captain. A battalion of 500 warriors was commanded by a HoH. (The Dominion War Sourcebook: The Fires of Armageddon)

The term comes from the armies and marines of Earth. The United States Army abbreviation was CPT; the Marine Corps used Capt.
