The Centaur class was a type of Federation starship that saw service during the 24th century.

This class was variously described as a destroyer, a frigate, and a cruiser in different continuities.
Orion Press differs from canon insofar as some vessels -- with the registry numbers NCC-1500 to 1518 -- were commissioned as early as the 2240s, with refits to linear warp drive in 2278. (Orion Press: Centaur-class Specifications)

Ships of the Centaur class had a primary hull and warp nacelles that were visually similar to those of Excelsior-class starships.

In this continuity, the Centaur class was referred to as the Renaissance class and designated as a frigate. An updated version of the mid-24th century is known as the Baracus class and was redesignated as a scout. (Hobbyist's Guide to the UFP Starfleet and Its History, Volume 1b)
