Challenger

The NX-class Challenger was a United Earth explorer starship in Earth Starfleet service in the mid-22nd century.

Its only known commanding officer was Captain Roy Dunsel, who activated the ship's self-destruct system during an engagement with Romulan forces to prevent its systems from being acquired by enemy hands. (ENT novel: The Romulan War: Beneath the Raptor's Wing)

Challenger, in this continuity, was commanded by a Captain Stiles, first name unrevealed. When 12 Romulan cruisers attacked Andoria in 2157, Challenger had been leading Earth Starfleet vessels against Andorian Imperial Guard ships in a wargames exercise.

Nomenclature

The starship was named after the American space shuttle Challenger that disintegrated 73 seconds into its tenth mission, STS-51-L, on 28 January 1986. This resulted in the deaths of all seven crew members including a civilian school teacher, Christa McAuliffe.
