Christianity was an Earth religion founded in the first century A.D./C.E. following the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Its adherents, usually called Christians, believe that Jesus is the Son of the one God who created the universe and that he was sent to redeem the people from their sins through his death and resurrection. Christianity was a religion with multiple sects--usually called denominations, that largely fall under three major groups: Catholicism, Protestantism, and Orthodoxy. The Christian Old Testament has the same books as the Jewish Tanakh; however, Christianity also adds the New Testament to its Bible, and its doctrines diverged from Judaism almost immediately.
Islam would later draw upon Christianity as one source for its teachings.
Earth's early history, literature, and arts were strongly influenced by this monotheistic religion, though some sources suggest that in the post-First Contact era, its influence waned considerably, making its believers a minority group among humans.
As was the case with Islam and Judaism, the other two Abrahamic faiths of Earth, Christianity and its followers underwent a spiritual and cultural upheaval with the initial contacts with extraterrestrial intelligent species such as the Vulcans and Centaurians in the mid-21st century. Such contacts fostered, in many ways, no less a crisis than the events of 1 May 2053, during World War III, where nuclear weapons were detonated above, near, or even in Middle Eastern cities considered sacred by all three faiths. (The Lost Era novel: The Sundered)
Non-humans and those with partial non-human ancestry have also been known to practice the religion. (Sigils and Unions: Catacombs of Oralius: "Captives' Ransom", Star Trek: Pendragon, The Starfleet Museum, Orion Press)
