Columbia (NX-02) was a NX-class explorer in Earth Starfleet service during the mid-22nd century.

Columbia was launched in November 2154 as the second ship of the NX class, with several technological upgrades compared to her predecessor. Her first commanding officer was Erika Hernandez. (ENT: "Affliction", "Home")

The logs of the starship Discovery for August 9, 2156 (during the Earth-Romulan War) recommended to Starfleet that Columbia, along with Atlantis, catch the Romulans off-guard by performing surgical ‘calvary raids’ on their outposts. (USS Baldwin: "Against the Wind")

After Columbia went missing and presumed destroyed, a new series of vessels was built using the basic NX-class spaceframe but adding a secondary hull. These vessels would be known as the Columbia class. Two vessels refitted to this standard were the Enterprise and the Endeavour. (Rise of the Federation novel: A Choice of Futures)

The wreckage of Columbia was found on a planet in the Gamma Quadrant two hundred years after being reported lost. It was speculated that the Dominion might have had contact with the Alpha Quadrant far earlier than had been realized. (Ships of the Line; Star Trek: Destiny novel: Gods of Night)

In different realities, Columbia had different designations.

Fan continuities[]

"As if Rain for Resurrection"[]

In this continuity, Columbia was not lost in the 2150s, and was in service through at least 2179. An ancestor of James T. Kirk's was a cook aboard Columbia.

Star Trek: Artemis[]

In 2385, Columbia was placed under the command of Fleet Captain David Hawk, who has been chosen to lead a team of officers into the past to stop a group of Human Augments from changing Federation history. (Star Trek: Artemis)

Line of Duty: a Star Trek Fan Production[]

Columbia was lost with all hands during an attack on Starbase One.

The Unreliable's Light[]

Columbia encounters a biomimetic parasite in 2155, which soon begins killing or hijacking crewmembers and taking over the ship. Enterprise attempted to save Columbia, but were stopped by Commander Xavier Bolton, who took command after the death of Captain Hernandez. Columbia is left adrift until 2364, where the Unreliable encounters an SOS that was repeating for 209 years. An away team boarded, but it ended in disaster with Devoid being hijacked by the parasite. Columbia soon went active, attempting to destroy whatever ships cross its path. A fleet at Starbase 523 attempted to intercept, but all got destroyed. The Unreliable and the USS Lynimick escaped and destroyed Columbia after developing a cure for the parasite to cure Devoid.
