The D'Vorx class was a Romulan espionage ship whose origins could be traced back to the 23rd century. In terms of combat capability, they could be akin to that of heavy destroyers.

History and variants[]

The Romulan Star Navy headquarters received a report from the Bureau of Starships that had been three years in preparation. The result of this report was to commission a class of starships that was revolutionary in design: the D'Vorx modular cruiser.

The Romulans could not afford the time or the resources to build a large number of specialized cruisers, so they instead built a single cruiser hull that different specialized modules were attached to. This wasn't an easy process and it required a full shipyard to convert the modules, but it allowed the Romulans to build a few ships in the time available. (TOS video game: Starfleet Command)

D'Vorx-A[]

The D'Vorx-A was the most basic and most common version of the class in the early 24th century. It was a balanced cruiser design and arguably one of the best light cruiser in service anywhere. It lacked, however, the staying power of a true heavy cruiser. (TOS video game: Starfleet Command)

D'Vorx-G[]

Carrying the 240 fighting men of an imperial marine battalion, the D'Vorx-G was able to prove, time and again, capable of fighting its way to its destination. (TOS video game: Starfleet Command)

However, the few units of this variant that survived the Dominion War became prison ships as of 2386. (RIS Bouteina: "The Measure of a Romulan")

D'Vorx-L[]

This module was intended to provide a command cruiser version of the D'Vorx with increased command facilities at the cost of cramped crew quarters. (TOS video game: Starfleet Command)

D'Vorx-J[]

In an attempt to field more ships with more plasma firepower, the Romulans created a limited number of J-modules for the D'Vorx class. These modules reduced the number of phasers but increased the number of plasma torpedo launchers. The ship was not considered well-designed, but was used to support base assaults. This ship was built only on refitted D'Vorx-A hulls. (TOS video game: Starfleet Command)

D'Vorx-Z[]

This ship was never referred to in the Starfleet Command game manual but it nonetheless existed in the game. As such, it was the latest version of the class that players could fly in the main storyline, as the class was launched in 2310.

At the turn of the 24th century, Romulans designed a Z-module that contained additional espionage equipment, as well as more plasma torpedo launchers and greater warp as well as impulse speeds. This was the most numerous variant to survive the Dominion War. In the 2380s, this was the most common version and, as such, the Romulan Star Navy referred to the entire class as being espionage ships. However, the older ships of that variant were reassigned as survey vessels. (RIS Bouteina: "Manhunt")
