The Daystrom Institute, also called the Daystrom Institute of Technology and abbreviated DIT, was an academic organization, named in honor of Doctor Richard Daystrom, which contributed to the United Federation of Planets in terms of scientific and medical research. Both civilian scientists and Starfleet officers worked for the Institute, which had facilities and annexes on many worlds within the Federation. (TNG: "The Measure of a Man", "The Offspring", et. al)
The Institute was founded sometime before 2256. (DIS: "Choose Your Pain")
- That the institute existed over a decade before the events of TOS: "The Ultimate Computer", could indicate that Dr. Daystrom founded the institute and named it after himself.
Admiral Cartwright was Starfleet's liaison to the Institute during the 2280s. (Star Trek: Excelsior novel: Forged in Fire)
Dr. Sian Gabriel joined Starfleet with the rank of reserve ensign so she could work with the Institute on transwarp experiments. (Starship Deimos)
- Since the Daystrom Institute had both Starfleet and civilian personnel, it was unclear why Dr. Gabriel had to join Starfleet in order to work on transwarp experiments.
By the mid-24th century, the Institute maintained a large annex on Galor IV which was dedicated to researching technological advancements in the fields of cybernetics and experimental propulsion systems. (TNG: "The Offspring")
In the 2390s, a major Daystrom Institute facility was located in Okinawa, Japan on Earth. Dr. Agnes Jurati worked there in the Division of Advanced Synthetic Research. (PIC: "Remembrance")
