Demotion is a short story by the pseudonymous jespah.
The story is told from the perspective of Major Jay Hayes, while on the Enterprise (NX-01).
On January 8, 2154, Hayes accuses Daniel Chang of going AWOL, as Chang was supposed to be guarding T'Pol after Jonathan Archer returned from a Xindi-Insectoid hatchery (ENT: "Hatchery"). Instead, Chang was preparing to meet with Sandra Sloane, a crewman.
As Hayes confronts Chang in the hall, Lili O'Day and Jennifer Crossman overhear. The two women begin walking away quickly in order to avoid the confrontation, but return when they hear the sound of fabric being ripped. The damage has occurred because Chang made a crack to Hayes about Don't Ask, Don't Tell, thereby implying that Hayes is homosexual.
Upon seeing the damage, the women suggest that Chang go to see the Quartermaster, Chandrasekar Khan. Once they leave again, Hayes informs Chang that he has been demoted to Private from Corporal, and is also going to be disciplined for sexual harrassment.
