Destroyers are usually smaller, swift, long-endurance starships utilized to protect larger ships against enemy or hostile threats. They are usually lightly armed.

In 24th century Starfleet, the term "destroyer" was not favored, with the term "frigate" being used more often.

An escort may be the same or similar to a destroyer.

Cardassian destroyers were typically smaller then a cruiser but larger and more heavily armed then a frigate. (Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 2: Starships of the Cardassian Union)

Klingon destroyers were about the size of a frigate but their armaments were comparable to a cruiser. The Klingons also produced heavy destroyers which could have the firepower of a light warship. (Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 3: Ships of the Klingon Empire)

During the Dominion War Starfleet found that their heavy frigates were, in terms of capability, were comparable to destroyers used by hostile forces. (Spacedock: The Advanced Starship and Construction Manual)

The Romulan gunship classification was a equivalent to a destroyer. (Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 5: Starships of the Romulan Star Empire)
