Discharge Kid (Slang); Underage Personnel forcibly discharged from Moab Confederacy Military Service due to specific problems with underage enlistments whom have seen combat at least one time.
This subgroup has around five to fifteen times the suicide rate of similarly aged persons, and consists largely of Orphans after the Fek'Ihri invasion. Criminality rates, hazardous hobbies, homelessness and mental illnesses are also significantly higher than among comparable human populations in the Federation within this age category.
Other slang terms often used among this subgrouping (and among Moab Confederacy veterans of the ground war to retake the cities that fell to the invaders) include, but are not limited to:
"Going to see the Family"-a Euphemism for suicide.
"Taking an Ia Drang Shower"-Suicide, usually by handgun, in a latrine or shower stall.
"Going home to Mom"-Suicide in a Closet, or vehicle.
Discharge kids often manifest severe depressive episodes in addition to the classical symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Severe cases have also experienced psychotic episodes and unwanted re-experience of Memories from their time in uniform. Alcoholism, drug abuse, and risky personal habits are common within this subgroup, as are arrests for Assault, public disorder, and similar indicators of the severity of their experiences during the Fek'Ihri war[1][2][3][4]
Most Discharge kids who could, were directed to offworld residential education [5]in part to ease the stress on Moab's crippled civilian infrastructure in the wake of losing over 30% of the Moab System's total population including the secondary colony of New Saigon entirely. Social Services in Federation and Neutral jurisdictions have begun to identify MCDF Vets as high-risk personnel in need of the kind of counseling and treatment their home nation is unable to provide. This was part of the motivation with the UFP's supreme court to block an injunction on the ruling by the United Earth's court regarding the Moab Secession-the humanitarian argument that the breakaways not only had too many underage personnel, but had used them hard and thrown them to the winds was expressed by the Cardassian Delegates after Goralis, and has influenced the Klingon High Council into opening the doors at Ty'Gokor academy to Discharge kids as a means of preventing warriors who served with honor and distinction from collapsing under the weight of peacetime.
As of 2412, there were three 'Discharge kids' at Starfleet Academy, all three are on supplemental mental health and wellness programs in addition to their studies there. so far, no MCDF vets who got into Starfleet Academy have taken their own lives.[5]
But the rate of suicides[2] is considered to be a significant problem, as is the obvious damage of prolonged traumas experienced in combat.
