Down Under refers to a song written by the Earth singer Colin Hay of the band Men at Work in 1981. The title comes from the widely-known Earth term to describe Australia and New Zealand. It was an instant success and was a popular patriotic song in Australia in the 1980s.
The lyrics revolve around a traveler who is proud of his Australian heritage and his interactions with people interested in his home country with the flute solo being from the traditional Australian song Kookaburra.
Tom Paris frequently argued with Henry Kano that the song was the best expression of Australian pride; Kano vehemently argued that Waltzing Matilda was.
Marty McFly tended to agree with Paris's assessment of the song much to Kano's dismay.(Star Trek: Voyager - Dark Realm)
