Background information[]
This class was known as the Galaxy class in the novelizations for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.
In the Star Trek: The Original Series novel: Dreadnought! (set about 2270), the project was known as early as the late 2260s. Two Starfleet Academy cadets, Brian Silayna and Piper, expected to be assigned to Captain Mandala Flynn's crew on the USS Magellanic Clouds. The Hobbyist's Guide, however, seems to posit that the impetus for the project was inspired/instigated by V'Ger's invasion of the Sol system (Star Trek: The Motion Picture), which took place about 2273.
