The dreadnought type is used to describe a heavily-armed starship. The dreadnought is usually built specifically for combat and has the best weapons and the strongest defenses.

Usually, a dreadnought is larger and more heavily armed than a battle cruiser but also is generally slower and less maneuverable due to its size, some powers operate smaller vessels fitted out with dreadnought weapons in order to circumvent this limitation, one such Pocket Battleship is the Defiant-class. (STNO: "Excalibur")

The Pac-Men wanted to build Luna-class ships as dreadnoughts of their own. They were ultimately granted this right as Federation members. (RIS Bouteina: "Extraordinary Summit")

Hydrans designated dreadnoughts as second only to battleships in size and armament. (RIS Bouteina: "Humans, Romulans and Space-Beasts")

Unlike the Hydrans, the Interstellar Concordium differentiated between ordinary dreadnoughts and super-dreadnoughts, by the caliber and quantity of armament mounted on them. (RIS Bouteina: "The Day Where Students Have Stopped Calculating")

Lyran dreadnoughts were often galactic survey cruisers that were more heavily armed. Also, in the Lyran Starfleet, dreadnoughts often served as flagships of tactical wings or larger units. (Star Trek: The Stoneship Files)
