Edward Jellico

Edward Jellico was a Starfleet officer in the late 24th century. Holding the rank of captain, Jellico was the USS Cairo's commanding officer in 2369 and also temporarily took command of the USS Enterprise-D in that same year. He also was an instrumental player in the Federation-Cardassian treaty between the Federation and Cardassian Union in 2367. (Star Trek: The Next Generation)

History

In 2369, Jellico managed to stop a Cardassian fleet from engaging Starfleet and forced the safe return of Enterprise captain Jean-Luc Picard, to whom he returned control of the Enterprise. (TNG: "Chain of Command, Part I", "Chain of Command, Part II")

By 2374, Jellico was no longer in command of the Cairo. (DS9: "In the Pale Moonlight")

Star Trek: Liberty

By the mid-2370s, Jellico had been promoted to Admiral, and clashed with Captain Luciano Mantovanni during several missions of the USS Liberty. (STL: "Ulterior Motives")

Star Trek: Lambda Paz

In 2366, as captain of the USS Cairo, Jellico commanded a fleet in Sector 21505, in the hope of achieving some decisive victory over the Cardassians. That victory was achieved thanks in part to the crew of the USS Horatio Nelson under the command of Ronnie Kozar.

Following his promotion to rear admiral (lower half) sometime prior to 2374, Jellico turned over command of the Cairo to his first officer Leslie Wong. He dubbed Wong one of the best officers to serve under him after Wong and the Cairo were declared missing in action after a skirmish with the Jem'Hadar in the Romulan Neutral Zone. In early 2374, when the Dominion War broke out, Jellico was named commander of the Seventh Fleet. He recommended Kozar for command of the USS Lambda Paz. That suggestion was overruled, so Jellico personally delivered the news to Kozar. (Star Trek: Lambda Paz: "Revenge a Dish Best Served Cold")

Star Trek: Pendragon

Edward Jellico was involved in the coup d'etat of the Federation, lead by Admiral James Leyton, in 2372, which lead to the Federation Civil War. During Operation Return Leyton's fleets were engaged with Starfleet forces, several away teams from both sides met. Captain Picard and Admiral Edward Jellico sent a joint message to both fleets, calling for a cease-fire. Afterwards Jellico surrendered the Leytonite forces to Admiral William Ross aboard Spacedock.

Command style

When in command of the Enterprise-D, Jellico's command style was very alien to the Enterprise crew, causing uneasiness amongst the crew. During the process, first officer William Riker was removed from duty and replaced by Data. (TNG: "Chain of Command, Part I", "Chain of Command, Part II")

Background information

In the non-canonical novel series Star Trek: New Frontier, written by Peter David and published by Pocket Books, Jellico later goes on to become an admiral, initially assigned to Starbase Deep Space 5 and later working in Starfleet Command. He also appears in the novel A Time to Heal by David Mack.
