The Starfleet Marines carry a long tradition from the United States Marine Corps (USMC) of Earth. Typically, they serve as naval-to-ground forces in times of war. In the times of Starfleet, their mission was forced to become more dynamic. Moving from the seas of planet earth, they took a place amongst the Starfleet vessels and into orbit-to-ground combat. Many of the Starfleet Marine Corps (SFMC) ranks share the same origins of the USMC. The ranks may have changed, but the heart of the Marines has never moved from their mission.
