The Federation Merchant Service, also known as the Merchant Marine, was a civilian organization. The Merchant Service served in a supplementary role to Starfleet, conducting trade and transport operations, colonial support, customs duties, and planetary surveys. Merchant Service ships and equipment were generally Starfleet surplus.
