Quark, a male Ferengi, in 2375. |
The Ferengi were a humanoid species native to the planet Ferenginar in the Alpha Quadrant. They developed a culture that saw the acquisition of profit as the most important aspect of one's life. By the 24th century, they were a space-faring civilization governed by the Ferengi Alliance. (Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine)
Society[]
Ferengi culture was highly patriarchal and females were considered property. Their lives were highly restrictive as they were not allowed into business or politics or even leave their homes without a male escort. During the 2370s, steps were taken to reform Ferengi culture and increase women's standing in Ferengi society. (DS9: "Rules of Acquisition", "Family Business", "Profit and Lace", "Dogs of War")
History[]
The Ferengi purchased warp technology at some point between 1947 and 2151, allowing them to expand their business empire further. (DS9: "Little Green Men")
In the mid 24th century, the Beguiler Operator program, to engineer the best Ferengi swindlers and dealers, was generally accepted as a failure. (Star Trek: Phoenix-X: "Devil's Leftovers")
In 2381, the crew of the USS Pioneer encountered the Ferengi Mordoc in the Oralian sector onboard an Alkanden Outpost; He was in the middle of trying to sell obsolete weapons to the So'ja Resistance. (Star Trek: Pioneer: "In the Shadows")
