Star Trek: Independence is a series of fan fiction novels following the adventures of the USS Independence (NCC-90346) and her crew in the late 24th century.

Synopsys[]

In 2394, several factions are vying for control of the remains of the Romulan Star Empire. The United Federation of Planets struggles to maintain order along its border as conflicts break out in the former Romulan Neutral Zone. Although they officially maintain a position of neutrality in the conflicts, Starfleet has been sending ships to put out brush fires in order to maintain Federation interests. The situation came to a head when the largest of the groups, the Romulan Free State (RFS), entered into a peace agreement with the Federation. This agreement included aid in taking back worlds which the competing New Romulan Empire had claimed by force. Meanwhile, the Fenris Rangers continue to struggle with keeping the peace in a lawless territory not yet reached by the RFS.

The USS Independence and her crew are assigned to various missions along the Federation's border with Romulan territory, including diplomatic, scientific, and defensive operations.

Concept[]

The goal of the series is to fill in some of the gap between Star Trek: Nemesis and Star Trek: Picard; telling stories within a world very different from the one portrayed in the shows. Series creator and author Marc Wagner inserts himself as an author surrogate into the role of the Independence's captain. Most of the characters are based on people who serve in the U.S.S. Independence fan association upon which the ship is based. Wagner has been writing stories about the fictional Independence for over 20 years. Of the series he states, "It is a chance for me to live my dream job through the characters. By literally making the captain me, I find it easier to connect with that world and the decisions he has to make in critical situations. I am very conscious of the character and am very careful to balance his strengths with his flaws; the last thing I want is to create a Mary Sue." The ship itself is not new, unlike most staring vessels in the Star Trek shows, but has been in service for 17 years at the series start. Wagner, the character, has been in command for over a year and was previously the ship's First officer having served in Starfleet for over 20 years. The series' characters are represented by real world actors cast into the roles.
