Rachel Summers is a starfleet officer who served in the late 24th century and early 25th century in Star Trek: Independence (Novel Series). She is a doctor and former Chief Medical Officer. She is a superior scientist in various fields of scientific research such as microbiology, xenoimmunology, exobiology, and biophysics. She most notably served as the First officer on the USS Independence (NCC-90346). She is portrayed by Laura Prepon.

History[]

Early Career[]

Summers attended school at the Bajoran Science Ministry after the Cardassian Occupation ended in 2369 and later finished her specialization training in microbiology at Starfleet Academy, graduating in 2371 with honors. Stationed at Procularia Special Research Station as her first assignment in 2371. With the lack of resources for medical research during the Dominion War, Doctor Summers took a commission as Chief Medical Officer on the USS Republic in 2373. In 2381 Summers was on temporary assignment to the USS Liberty during a mission to study an anomalous gas cloud near the Altair Nebula. She began a relationship during the mission with the ship's First officer, Marc Wagner. The ship's Chief Medical Officer was due to retire, so she requested, and was granted, permission to remain on the Liberty.

Service on USS Independence[]

Summers moved to the USS Independence (NCC-90346) in 2387 as Chief medical officer. She was joined by fellow Liberty officers Michael Sunsdahl, Marc Wagner, and Jennifer Williams. In 2393, she was promoted to replace newly promoted Captain Marc Wagner as First officer of the Independence.

Personal life[]

Summers was born on February 14th, 2355 on Bajor. Born to Dejala and Andrew Summers. She learned her love of science and exploration at an early age from her human father, Doctor Andrew Summers. He was a member of a medical relief effort which the Bajoran Occupied Government allowed to aid the Bajoran people during the Cardassian Occupation. Dejala, a Bajoran nurse, served in his clinic where they eventually fell in love and married. As a child born under Cardassian rule, Rachel was inundated with a deep sense of pride for the Bajoran people and her faith in the prophets is devout.

Relationship[]

Summers met Marc Wagner while attending Starfleet Academy. The two served together briefly during training cruises in their senior year. They would meet again They were married in 2387 when both were transferred to the Independence.

Deeply compassionate and lively, Commander Summers has consistently shown to be not only thorough but conscientious in her daily work and routine.
