The USS Orion (NCC-75421) was a modified Nebula-class starship active in the 24th century.
During the Dominion War, the Orion was equipped with an experimental cloaking device and a powerful arsenal of weaponry. Her crew was infiltrated by a Changeling which led to the entire crew being killed and the ship being taken over by Dominion forces.
The Orion and her advanced technology were eventually destroyed in battle by a Federation Alliance fleet. (USS Angeles: The Price of Duty)

According to Rob Caves, the upper "pod" is primarily a weapon's platform, but also contains a bridge and warp engines. This allows it to separate and serve as a heavily armed auxiliary craft.
