In the Federation Marine Corps, first sergeant is one level below sergeant major and master gunnery sergeant and is the next rank above gunnery sergeant. It is equal in grade to master sergeant, although the two ranks have different responsibilities.
First Sergeants focus more on the command side of marine occupations, rather than technical operations at Master Sergeants go into. First Sergeants will generally move into the command track and into Sergeant Major if they wish to continue.
