The Founders were a group of Changelings from the Gamma Quadrant. Though generally considered mythical, they were the ruling force behind the Dominion.
In the late 19th century, a young Changeling encountered a dieing El Aurian named Daniel on the homeworld. When the El Aurian died, the rebellious Changeling mimicked his likeness and took his name out of curiosity. Soon after, the new Daniel was driven to escape the Changeling homeworld as part of a conflict with the link for desiring a life with aliens. (Star Trek: Phoenix-X: "The Links' Traitor")
After contact was made between the Dominion and the United Federation of Planets in the 2370s, several Founders were dispatched to infiltrate the major powers of the Alpha Quadrant. One posed as Colonel Lovok of the Romulan Tal Shiar, one replaced Klingon General Martok, and there were four on Earth during the Leyton crisis.
