The Grenadier-class was an Hydran class of galactic survey cruisers launched in the 24th century. There were a relatively small number of hulls launched because of the Hydrans' philosophy of building ships that could perform exploration duties in peacetime. They were also outfitted with its own complement of Stinger-class fighters. However, many unknowns remain about these ships. (RIS Bouteina)

What was known about the Grenadiers is that, with their fighter complement, they could engage Klingon Vor'cha-class ships one-on-one and still hold their own, even more so considering that the Vosteage could defeat the IKS Nav'Don in battle but not without having to repel a Klingon boarding party. One ship of that class served as the Hydran testbed for the cloaking device, first found to be faulty. (RIS Bouteina: "Vosteage")

When their improved cloaking device was developed, the Hydran Royal Navy made the decision to convert all Grenadiers under construction to a new class of multi-vector assault mode-capable light carriers with the cloaking device installed onboard, of which the Vosteage was the lead ship, even though she was merely refitted from an old Grenadier hull. It had a maximum evacuation capacity of 13,700. (RIS Bouteina: "Ice Cream Parlor")
