Gretchen Louisa Jaeger was a Federation Starfleet officer on active duty in the 23rd century.
She was the daughter of Douglas Jaeger, a Starfleet officer assigned to the USS Armstrong, and Frances (née Holland) Jaeger. The Jaegers lived in the Ganymede Triad 6 colony on Ganymede. When she was eight years old, her father was killed on a mission.
Jaeger entered Starfleet Academy against the wishes of her mother and siblings, who stopped speaking to her.
Two of her instructors at the Academy were Spock and Dawson Walking Bear. When she took the Kobayashi Maru exam c. 2277, Spock was at the sciences station, and Walking Bear the helm, in the simulator. Jaeger attempted a maneuver called "Hikaru's Hope" but it was unsuccessful. (Orion Press: The Dianasian Gift)
Jaeger was a navigator assigned to USS Excelsior, under Captain Styles for one year.
In 2287, Lieutenant Jaeger was a navigations officer and relief helm officer assigned to the Enterprise-A. While on a rescue mission on a planetoid in the Alpha Reticuli system, two of the security officers were killed by the Klingons they were attempting to rescue. Jaeger blamed herself for their deaths, as she felt she hadn't acted quickly enough. (The Dianasian Gift)
Jaeger and Pavel Chekov were married in 2287 (The Dianasian Gift), but did not renew their contract.
By 2294, Jaeger had become executive officer of the USS Alliance, under Captain Daniel Williams. (Orion Press: Chekov's Enterprise) She later succeeded Williams in the captaincy after his death. (Orion Press: "The Nature of the Game")
Jaeger was demoted to commander due to her exceeding the mandate of an inquiry involving the senior officers of the Enterprise-B, then reassigned to another ship. ("The Nature of the Game")
Background[]
