The Hermes class was a class of Federation scouts in operation during the 23rd century. (Star Fleet Technical Manual)

The Hermes was designed alongside the Saladin-class and shared many features, with the main difference being that it only has one phaser bank and a smaller crew complement. (Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 4: Starships of the Original Series Era)

The Hermes class was introduced in the late 2220s to early 2240s.(Citation needed)

Alternate continuities[]

Cloak and Dagger[]

Hermes-class scouts were mostly tasked for Starfleet Intelligence missions, at least in the 2260s, but the USS Adventure's mission was one of science and exploration.

Star Trek: Axanar[]

The seven ships of this class had a rollbar attached to the dorsal hull. As well, their registries were in the 1520s and 1530s. (Star Trek: Axanar: Prelude to Axanar)

The dimensions of the Hermes-class starships in Axanar had smaller dimensions: length: 186 m, beam: 122 m, draft: 35.5 m. And, as shown in Prelude to Axanar, these ships may have served as destroyers, not scouts.
