The high density particle beam weapon was a directed energy weapon used by Starfleet since 2161, used alongside weaker multiphasic lasers and phase modulated weaponry. The high density particle beam weapon had about 40% more energy than the phase cannon and 10% more than the multiphasic lasers; however the HD particle weapon lacked sufficient re-fire rates to combat the Klingon disruptors. This led to the production of the phased laser in 2235 which was 20% More powerful than the HD particle weapons and had the same re-fire rates as the average phase cannon. The HD particle weapon was phased out by 2250 when the phased laser became the most common weapon on all Starfleet vessels. (Star Trek: Origins)
