The Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy was a training facility operated by the Lyran Starfleet with multiple campuses that specialized in training security personnel (and line infantry). Graduates from the ISMA (and, in fact, enlisted Lyran security personnel) were known as stormtroopers. As its namesake implied, the standard ISMA curriculum included disruptor marksmanship. The logo of the Academy featured a standard issue, white environmental suit helmet.
During the Dominion War, Lyran stormtroopers (and hence Lyran Starfleet Security) gained, in the Cardassian Union, a reputation for poor marksmanship. However, by the 25th century, poor marksmanship was the single largest cause of failure at the Academy, accounting for over 90% of all expulsions from the Academy. In addition, the main campus was designed, in part, by Florence Hémono. (Star Trek: False Vacuum)
Flunking out of the Academy[]
After one is flunked out of the Academy, one had to undertake a battery of tests administered by the commanders of the Academy, whose aim was to determine whether an Academy failure was redeemable. Common fates for Academy failures that were deemed redeemable were to serve in the sciences division or the engineering division. (Star Trek: False Vacuum: "Asteroid Dusting")
