Jakarta is the capital, and largest city, of the archipelagic nation of Indonesia, on Earth.

The city was one of many on Earth that had lost land to the rising sea levels brought on by manmade climatic change. After World War III and contacts with extraterrestrial intelligent species, some of that land was reclaimed with the help of terraforming methods that indigenous Centaurians traded to Earth nations in exchange for warp-drive technology. In the real world 2019, the Indonesian president, Joko Widodo, announced that the capital would be moved from Jakarta -- 40% of which is under sea level -- to a new site in East Kalimantan province on the island of Borneo, with the new capital to be inaugurated in 2024.
