Jonathan P. Hanson, better known as J.P. Hanson, was a Starfleet flag officer, with the rank of vice admiral, who worked for Starfleet Tactical in the 2360s. During his tenure there, Hanson was charged with finding means to combat the Borg threat following the USS Enterprise-D's encounter with them in 2365. (TNG: "The Best of Both Worlds")

The character is canonically known as "J.P. Hanson", with the first name "Jonathan" being given in "The Silence Ends".

In late 2366, Hanson and Lieutenant Commander Elizabeth Shelby traveled to Jouret IV after the Enterprise-D discovered that the Federation colony on the surface had been destroyed. Once it was discovered that the Borg were responsible, Hanson left to meet with Starfleet Command. Shortly after, Hanson was placed in command of the fleet of Federation starships that were assigned to head off the Borg cube at Wolf 359. (TNG: "The Best of Both Worlds")

Hanson spoke personally with USS Prospect commanding officer Captain John Greene in asking for his ship's assistance at Wolf 359. He also spoke with the Starfleet Science Archaeology Division USS Worsaae's temporary commanding officer, Commander Anne Lansing, about her ship joining the fleet. Both ships were unable to reach the battle in time, the Prospect too far away and the Worsaae stuck in a class 9 plasma storm. (Star Trek: The Prospect Chronicles: "The Burnt Child")

Unfortunately, with the assimilated knowledge of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, the Borg were easily able to destroy the Federation fleet in the resulting battle, in which Hanson and his flagship USS Melbourne were casualties. (TNG: "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II")
