It was not revealed if Valin had been Eva Privette's beta- or gamma-shift counterpart as tactical officer on Tristan -- and moved up to alpha-shift when she became CO -- or if he had transferred from another ship.

Valin was known for his sense of humor among his shipmates, but it was not always appreciated by Captain Privette and others while he was on duty. ("36 Hours")
