The Kelvan race was a nonhumanoid species that originated in the Andromeda Galaxy. The crew of USS Enterprise encountered them at least once. During their initial contact with the Federation, the Kelvans assumed humanoid form. Their physicality, when not in humanoid form, included at least a hundred tentacle-like arms. (TOS: "By Any Other Name"; Strange New Worlds 9: "Gone Native")
In 2285, the Kelvans decimated the population of the Gorn homeworld while making a second attempt to invade the Milky Way Galaxy. The Federation formed ten task forces as a counteroffensive. (Orion Press: In Harm's Way)
A century later, at least two Kelvans, Ramat and Biket, would be considered outlaws to the Kelvan High Command. Ramat, himself, had intentionally escaped his people to rebel against them. But after an encounter with the USS Phoenix-X and Admiral Theseus, in the Andromeda galaxy, he came to accept his people and decide to return. (Star Trek: Phoenix-X: "Forbidden Crossing, Part III")
