Klingon Defense Force

The Klingon Defense Forces (also called the Imperial Klingon Defense Forces) are the military branch of the Klingon Empire.

History

In 2373, the Klingon Defense Forces moved their headquarters from Qo'noS to Ty'Gokor. (DS9: "Apocalyse Rising")

Organization

The IKDF was little more then a bureaucratic body that operated support ships and older vessels. The true military strength of the Klingon Empire lay in its Great Houses and few warriors had any respect for the IKDF. This changed during the Dominion War when the Klingon High Council agreed to reorganize its forces for the conflict and unite them under a central authority, the IKDF with Chancellor Gowron placing General Martok as its commander.

Martok split his forces into fleets based around the fleet of a Great House. Lesser houses were then assigned to these fleets to create roughly numerically equal sized fleets. Martok took care to separate houses with long standing rivalries into different fleets. Each fleet commander was then allowed to organize their fleet as they saw fit.

For the Empire's ground forces Martok pushed commanders to use the following organization: division, brigade, battalion, company, platoon and squad. This standard made it easier for the IKDF to administer the Klingon's ground forces. (The Dominion War Sourcebook: The Fires of Armageddon)
