Kyle (Lieutenant)

Johnathan "John" Winston Thomas Kyle was a Federation Starfleet officer, of British descent, on active duty in the 23rd century.

Kyle had no canonical given name. In Starship Creator and many novels in the Pocket Books continuity, it is John, after the actor who played him. In Orion Press continuity, his full name is Jonathan Winston Kyle (nicknamed "Jon"). In FASA RPG continuity, it is Winston. In the continuity of DC Comics, it is Thomas.

During James T. Kirk's first five-year mission as commanding officer of the USS Enterprise, Kyle's primary billet was transporter chief (Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Animated Series), though he was cross-trained as a helmsman (TOS: "The Immunity Syndrome") and a science officer. (TOS: "Who Mourns for Adonais")

Kyle also served on Enterprise, after its refit, as chief maintenance officer for two years. (Orion Press: "Gorgon's Lair", Liberation from Hell)

By the mid-2280s, Kyle had been promoted to commander and was the second officer and chief communications officer of the USS Reliant, commanded by Captain Clark Terrell. (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan)

Starship Creator has Kyle's transfer to the Reliant in 2284, while Orion Press has the transfer in 2275. (Orion Press: "The Blue Rose")
