Early life[]
Kelso's parents died when he was very young, and he was raised in an orphanage in Los Angeles. (TOS novel: My Brother's Keeper trilogy: Constitution)

Starfleet[]
Upon graduation from Starfleet Academy, Lee Kelso was posted to USS Lexington as a helmsman, where he served many years, then transferred to the USS Potemkin. (Constitution)
As a lieutenant junior grade, Kelso served under James T. Kirk during Kirk's first command, aboard the destroyer USS Shenandoah, in 2264. (Orion Press: "Spider's Lair")
Kelso had transferred to the USS Enterprise by the time of its mission to the galactic barrier. He was strangled by power cables telekinetically manipulated by Gary Mitchell after Mitchell's esper abilities were enhanced by the barrier. (TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before")

In the ongoing IDW comic series based on Star Trek (2009), Kelso and Mitchell had been classmates of Kirk's at Starfleet Academy.
