Lurin was a Ferengi pirate. In 2369, he bought, armed, and repaired two B'rel class Birds-of-Prey in order to capture a Starfleet science team on Ligos VII and later the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D). He aimed to extract the vendarite on the planet and sell the starship on the Romulan market. After Jean-Luc Picard, Guinan, Ro Laren, Keiko O'Brien, Alexander Rozhenko, and William Riker regained control of the Enterprise-D, Lurin was taken into custody and the Ferengi Alliance denied any knowledge of him. (TNG: "Rascals")
Fanon continuities[]
Lurin was a geologist, mercenary, and an old friend of Bok, a Ferengi with a vendetta against Picard, captain of the Enterprise-D. After visiting Bok at Rog Prison, Lurin saw an opportunity to give his business associate peace-of-mind and make a huge profit. Keeping his real motives secret from the crew by pretending the starship capture would be a random attack, Lurin followed the movements of the Enterprise-D and used his scientific knowledge to work out the best place to attack. He also studied the crew's reactions to boarding parties, such as the Borg and the Ansata. Lurin's fleet included the marauder Littner, the IKS Lukara, and the IKS Vorik.
Having worked out a plan and captured the Enterprise-D, Lurin was puzzled to not find any sign of Picard, the person he was really after. In fact, Picard had been transformed into a child and had pretended to be the son of Riker. Meanwhile, several Starfleet crewmembers had seized control of Ligos VII's mines and the IKS Vorik.(We've Netted a Federation Starship and Her Crew)
