M'Benga was a Federation Starfleet medical officer on active duty during at least the 23rd century.

M'Benga had no canonical given name. In the TOS novels The Vulcan Academy Murders and The IDIC Epidemic, it was said to be Geoffrey. In the continuity of Orion Press, his full name was Baraka Keme M'Benga (nicknamed "Keme", though he allowed Leonard McCoy to call him "Ben"). In the Star Trek: Vanguard novels, his given name was Jabilo.

M'Benga was of Zulu and Masai descent (Orion Press: "To Leap Tall Buildings").

In 2264, he was assigned to Starbase 47 and worked with Dr. Ezekiel Fisher. (Star Trek: Vanguard novels: Harbinger and Open Secrets)

Later, M'Benga served as assistant chief medical officer of the USS Enterprise during James T. Kirk's first five-year mission as its commanding officer, reporting to McCoy. M'Benga had interned for four years in a Vulcan ward and was educated in aspects of Vulcan medicine and physiology, such as the healing trance. (TOS: "A Private Little War", "That Which Survives", TOS novel: Death's Angel)

Beginning around 2292, M'Benga was Starfleet Surgeon General. (Orion Press: Chekov's Enterprise)

In 2296, M'Benga had planned on retiring, but became chief medical officer of the USS Hyperion, commanded by Captain Nyota Uhura. (Orion Press: "A Motley Crew")

In the 24th century, the M'Benga-class of rescue/hospital ships was named after M'Benga. (FASA RPG: Star Trek: The Next Generation Officer's Manual)
