MCDS Ia Drang (Modified K'Vort class Bird of Prey Cruiser)[]
Class: K'Vort Bird of Prey Cruiser (Retrofit)
Hull Registry: CG-01 (Cruiser, Variant, 001)
Role: Science Ship/Light Cruiser
Manufacturer: (Orignally) Korath Shipyard, Norgh system, 2311, Originally commissioned as Ba'Hud Torg
Retrofit: Moab III, Ia Drang Shipyard, (begun October 2408, retrofit completed January 2412).
History:[]
The Ba'hud Torg was part of the Klingon Empire's emergency measures after the Praxis Yards at Praxis Moon were destroyed in 2393, one of several hundred such vessels pushed into production after the loss of the primary contractor for the Klingon Empire's D-7 and follow on Cruiser design. The K'Vort class was built to be cheap to maintain, cheap to repair, heavily armed, and stealthy, while having longer range than the Bird of Prey D-12 scouts then currently in service, for sustained, duration missions.
The class as a whole had a bad reputation after defeats during the Romulan conflict due to an unrealized flaw in the ship's structural engineering that was revealed in the worst way possible-combat.
Ba'Hud Torg was part of the Torg Fleet, technically, however she was in Mothball service from about the moment that House Torg could obtain something-as in anything-else (this specific hull was put in storage in 2366).
Ba'Hud Torg was sold to the Moab Confederacy in 2408, after the yard it was stored at was seized by the Empire as part of the dismantling of The House of Torg. (House Martok outright refused to take the stored vessel, due to the type's crippled reputation and long period out of service). It was provided as part of the Military Aid package arranged by General B'Sanos.
The Moab Confederacy renamed Ba'Hud Torg to Ia Drang under the beginnings of a uniform naming convention, and, apprised of the "K'Vort Defect" set about re-engineering their new cruiser at the surface yards in (where else?) Ia Drang on the North Continent of Moab III.
The process took a while, as tooling had to be constructed, parts had to be obtained and modified and lessons learned from repairing other, smaller, Birds of Prey were worked in. The result of the first "Moab K'vorts" was more akin to a very fast science ship, though this was not fully implemented, as the Ia Drang launched on its first mission with the refit incomplete due to exigencies.
MCDS Ia Drang was the vessel that undertook preliminary survey and mapping of potential Rift locations identified by joint programme "Mountain Road". She was then seconded to the Cardassian Defense Forces at Goralis 11 Base, where much of the planned retrofit was finally completed in a fraction of the time it had taken to do the work with KDF authorized suppliers in the Empire.
First combat testing after the Goralis refit showed a vessel with slightly weaker (but resilient) shields compared to a Modernized Galor class, with harder hitting weapons fit and both tighter turn rate, and harder acceleration. Flaws in the Ia Drang's cloaking system persisted for the remainder of its service life (approximately three months).
Colonel Ngoc Trung, the ship's first, and only, commanding officer evacuated the vessel late in the Goralis Rift battle, to preserve his crew, and took it into the rift with an experimental device designed to close the rift on the invaders.
The ship did not survive this, but the device worked.

Apocrypa: We discussed 'what happened' to the ship and batted around the idea that pieces of it fell through into different realities and eras, including having the deflector assembly and part of the main computer fall on North Dakota circa 1985. We didn't end up doing that.
